As the debt crisis has made its impact more than obvious in the European Union, it is clear that it is not due to the “laziness” of the Greeks but due to the incomprehensiveness of the European System. Despite having adopting the common currency, the EU has not a common Economic, Fiscal and Tax policy. The Greek problem is just the precursor of the other southern countries problems (Portugal, Italy, Spain) and it is inevitable to lead to the dissolution of the EU, as “funds” of the stronger European economic forces will not be adequate to resolve the problem.
The only solution is a real European Union …. or else referred to as “United States of Europe”. We are talking about the creation of a federation of states similar to the United States of America. The European Union needs a common government with a common foreign policy and common system of taxation. Only in this way will the European South be able to recover and not set back the developing North.
Of course a problem for the accomplishment of such an agreement is the nationalistic tendencies that exist in most EU countries. Politicians who would support such unification will be accused of betrayal of national sovereignty, especially in regards to the economic and politically weak countries. The opponents will talk about decisions taken by the closed doors of Brussels and Frankfurt and the boards of multinational companies. That is why we do not hear the few voices who seek such a development.
However, European Union countries should take a final decision whether they want a united Europe or not.
As far as Greece is concerned, it is time to decide if it wishes to make a new start. Now the action of a professional trade unionist and politician, government bureaucracy, corruption of civil servants and cross-cutting contractors and suppliers (see “Clarity” – the electronic reporting system of the public sector expenditure that has been applied recently – and indignation of the Greek citizens) has been ended. The permanent employment of the civil servants, the closed professions and other “Greek patents” and “accommodations” should be wiped out. A common tax policy is the only way to have economic development again at the wounded and heavily indebted Greek Economy.
Europe on the other hand should recognize the "brake" that dictates to the European countries and to apply the same policy in all its constituent countries in order to conserve its unity.
